Veteran Affairs

The mission of the Office of Veteran Affairs:

We are dedicated to providing the highest quality and comprehensive support to student veterans and their family members in an atmosphere that provides commitment, respect, and academic excellence.

St. Philip’s College is a signatory to the Presidential Executive Order – Establishing Principles of Excellence for Educational Institutions Serving Service Members, Veterans, Spouses, and Other Family Members; and the “8 Keys to Veterans’ Success” which are steps that postsecondary institutions can take to assist Veterans and Servicemembers in transitioning to higher education, completing their college programs, and obtaining career-ready skills.

The Office of Veteran Affairs offers assistance to students receiving educational assistance under one of the public laws for veterans and/or their dependents. Students utilizing Veteran Affairs benefits and/or the Hazelwood exemption should contact the Veteran Affairs Office to obtain information regarding enrollment and specific requirements.

New student veterans and/or dependents are required to declare a degree/certificate- and provide official transcripts from every institution attended, including appropriate military transcripts (Joint Services Transcripts-JST and CCAF for Air Force).

Veteran Benefit Programs

Students wishing to use federal VA educational benefits should seek guidance through the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs or the Veteran Affairs office at the college. Alamo College Veteran Affairs staff will assist students by providing certification of courses and transmitting enrollment information to the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Veterans and dependents must declare a goal (follow an approved degree program) in order to be eligible to receive educational VA benefits. The VA will only pay for courses in the declared program and any exceptions require compliance with VA rules.

GI Bill®:

The benefit is designed to help service members and eligible veterans cover the costs associated with getting an education or training. The GI Bill® has several programs and each is administrated differently — depending on a person's eligibility and duty status. Visit http://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/ for more information.

Hazlewood Act Exemption

The Hazlewood Act is a State of Texas benefit that provides qualified Veterans, spouses, and dependent children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption, including most fee charges, at public institutions of higher education in Texas. This does NOT include living expenses, books, or supply fees.

For official Hazlewood, information go to the Texas Veterans Commission: CLICK HERE FOR HAZLEWOOD INFORMATION

Students are exempt from payment of tuition and certain required fees at any school receiving support from the State of Texas.
